A Different Class of Yamaha Grand Piano
Not all Yamaha grand pianos are created equal.

The Yamaha S4 is a premium handcrafted Artist Series grand piano, built to a higher level of craftsmanship and refinement than Yamaha's standard production grands. Sometimes referred to as a “Super Yamaha,” the S4 combines the precision, reliability, and responsive touch Yamaha is known for with the tonal richness, depth, and musical expression expected from a fine concert-quality instrument.

At 6'3", the S4 offers remarkable power, projection, and tonal complexity while remaining a practical size for homes, professional teaching studios, recording environments, and smaller performance spaces.

This is not simply another Yamaha grand piano. It represents a distinctly higher level of piano manufacturing, designed for discerning musicians who appreciate the craftsmanship, tonal sophistication, and expressive capabilities of a premium performance instrument.
Inspired by the World's Finest Concert Grands – Refined by Japanese Craftsmanship
Yamaha's handcrafted S Series represents the culmination of decades spent studying the finest traditions of European and American piano manufacturing, combined with Japan's extraordinary dedication to precision, craftsmanship, and continuous refinement.

Drawing upon the engineering principles and musical qualities that established legendary concert grand manufacturers such as Steinway & Sons, Yamaha developed its own distinctive approach to premium piano construction.

The Japanese philosophy of studying established craftsmanship, refining proven methods, and continually improving quality helped Yamaha become one of the world's most respected piano manufacturers.

The Yamaha S4 reflects this philosophy through its carefully selected materials, handcrafted construction, sophisticated acoustic engineering, and meticulous attention to detail.

Rather than simply producing another conventional grand piano, Yamaha sought to create an instrument capable of delivering the tonal complexity, resonance, responsiveness, and expressive range associated with the world's finest concert grands.

The result is a truly exceptional Japanese handcrafted performance piano, combining traditional piano-building principles with Yamaha's own engineering expertise and manufacturing precision.
Exclusive Yamaha Tone Collector System – Concert Grand Engineering
One of the most distinctive features of the Yamaha S4 is its specialized Tone Collector System, an advanced structural and acoustic design incorporated into Yamaha's premium handcrafted S Series grand pianos.

The underlying concept has historical roots in the development of high-performance concert grands, including Steinway & Sons' pioneering structural innovations of the late 19th century.

Steinway's patented metal shoe design helped establish an important approach to integrating the structural components of a grand piano, a tradition associated with the engineering of its larger performance instruments, including the renowned Models B and D.

Yamaha developed its own Tone Collector System, connecting the piano's radiating back posts with the cast-iron frame to help transmit soundboard vibrations throughout the instrument.

This specialized construction is intended to enhance the piano's acoustic performance, contributing to:
- Greater resonance and tonal richness
- Improved sustain and tonal depth
- Powerful, balanced projection
- Enhanced transmission of acoustic energy
- A more complex and expressive musical character
The Tone Collector is one of the sophisticated engineering details that distinguishes the handcrafted Yamaha S4 from Yamaha's conventional production grand pianos.

Combined with its carefully selected soundboard materials, precision-crafted bridges, specialized bass strings, and duplex scaling, this system reflects Yamaha's commitment to producing a premium performance instrument.
Handcrafted in Japan – Exceptional Quality
The Yamaha S4 was manufactured in Japan using carefully selected materials and specialized craftsmanship, with particular attention to the soundboard, action, hammers, and tonal preparation.

Unlike Yamaha's standard production grand pianos, the S Series received a higher level of individual craftsmanship and refinement, with an emphasis on achieving exceptional tonal balance, responsiveness, and musical expression.

Its musical characteristics include:
- Rich, warm bass with exceptional depth and resonance
- Clear, singing treble with excellent sustain
- Smooth, balanced tone throughout the entire keyboard
- Highly responsive action for precise control and expression
- Broad dynamic range, from delicate pianissimo to powerful fortissimo
- Handcrafted construction and refined tonal preparation
- Exceptional projection and tonal complexity for its size
The result is a grand piano offering a distinctly more sophisticated playing experience than Yamaha's conventional production models.
Exceptional Provenance – Barely Used and Beautifully Maintained
This exceptional 2000 Yamaha S4 was previously owned by a private household in a beautiful home on New York City's East Side, where it served primarily as a second piano and received very limited use.

The instrument has been carefully maintained and preserved in remarkable condition. Both the interior and exterior reflect the limited use and attentive care this piano has received throughout its life.

Its stunning high-gloss polished ebony cabinet presents beautifully, with an exceptionally clean interior and outstanding overall appearance.

The hammers, action components, and overall condition of the instrument reflect the relatively limited playing time this piano has experienced.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a premium handcrafted Yamaha grand that has been exceptionally well preserved.

The modern Yamaha SX Series continues this premium tradition, incorporating further developments in Yamaha's handcrafted grand piano design.

The newer Yamaha S3X, measuring 6'1", carries a published manufacturer's suggested retail price of approximately $88,000, illustrating the substantial investment associated with Yamaha's premium handcrafted instruments.

At 6'3", this Yamaha S4 offers a slightly larger instrument and an opportunity to experience the craftsmanship, tonal sophistication, and expressive capabilities of Yamaha's premium handcrafted grands at a fraction of the published price of a comparable new instrument.

With its exceptionally limited use, outstanding condition, specialized Tone Collector System, extensive professional preparation, and premium accessories, this Yamaha S4 represents an exceptional value in today's pre-owned grand piano market.
