Cunningham Piano Co. evaluated Mr. Berry's Steinway O Grand S/N 189348 on August 23, 2022. Here are some of their findings. This piano was manufactured in Long Island City, NY, where the company moved its manufacturing in 1911. The overall condition of the action is fair. Last recorded service of the piano was in 2018 when it was brought to its current home. This service included tuning, reshaping hammers, and voicing. The tuning was set to 445 for the evaluation and subsequently (September 14, 2022) tuned to a perfect 440 pitch standard.

The pinblock is in good condition for its age with appropriate torque. One bass string has been replaced, and its tuning pin has also been replaced with a larger size of pin. The soundboard is in good condition with no visible cracks.

The case and finish is in overall good condition considering its age. The finish is original veneer walnut. There are minor scratches along the left side. Subtle sun bleaching has lightened the wood. No visible missing veneer patches.

There is verdigris on the hammer flanges, but none on any visible whippen center pins. Verdigris is a bluish-green build up caused by paraffin solution used on Steinway pianos at this time. It is not causing any severe friction or repetition. The sostenuto pedal stop is missing. The damper pedal functions but has a rather loud return, due to the age and stiffness of the damper felts.
