This is a piano you will seldom see in the United States: a 1968 9 foot Grotrian Steinweg Model 275 concert grand! If you love rare, exceptional German instruments and have the place for it, this will make a magnificent impression in your space — at a fraction of the cost of a new Grotrian concert grand.

This one owner, living room piano was purchased new from Bernard Comsky Pianos in Los Angeles in 1969, regularly maintained and was only moved twice. All original parts. It has a big bold low end, very clear upper register, long sustain resonance and looks like new. Tuned last year and still sounding solid, could use regulation and voicing......or full reconditioning.

About THIS piano: "Artie Kane (an American pianist, film score composer, and conductor) discovered the (Grotrian) piano, and (at the time) really liked it… by the time he had shared this passion… Dave Grusin, Michel Legrand, Alan & Marilyn Bergman, and several other "notables" got the (same brand Grotrian) piano.

I couldn't make up my mind between the 9' Grotrian and a new imported Hamburg Steinway B (!). They were both at Bernard Comsky Artist Pianos. I had them both carted to my house for 2 weeks, and various compatriots came over to give me their preferences! I couldn't make up my mind, but I think that .....the idea of being able to have a 9' piano won out!"

Steinway lineage: Not many know that the company that became Grotrian was actually started by Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg, in Seesen, Germany, in 1835. He passed it on to his son, C.F. Theodor, before emigrating to the U.S. where he Americanized his name and founded the famous Steinway & Sons in New York City. In 1856, Theodor partnered with G.F.K. Grotrian. Subsequent members of that family have been involved with the company for six generations!

Although not as well-known in America, Grotrian pianos are compared with the finest premier performance instruments in the world.

Comments about the 275 model from a tech: "I was fortunate to be apprenticing in the mid 1970s with the technician who operated one of the only two or three shops that imported Grotrian at that time - Leonard Jared of the J.B Company in San Rafael, California. He imported two or three Grotrian concert grands in the mid-1970s while I was with him. I can tell you that as new instruments they were clearly just about the finest piano in the world. Fantastic sound and design. The crates they were shipped in were of better workmanship than most houses in California. I very much recall that after being air shipped, moved and set up the Grotrian 275 came out of the crate in almost perfect regulation and tuning. Of course the piano is now over 45 years old, but if it was well maintained it should still be a great instrument."
