My mother inherited this instrument from its original owner, and I've inherited it from her. It's in very god condition and has a lovely, warm tone. We are downsizing and want it to find a good home. Here is what our certified piano technician reported as part of a recent appraisal: "The piano is a New York Steinway 5’11” Model O grand piano serial #130521 in mahogany satin finish. Piano has non-matching mahogany curved leg bench. The case has been completely refinished and is in very good condition with minor cosmetic scratches. The rebuild completed in 1998, seems to have to have been done neatly, properly and with care. The soundboard is original and has 3 visible soundboard separations that were previously repaired. Twenty years later, the shims are still tight and look craftsmanlike.
The stringing has neat, tight coils and beckets. The plate has a nice gloss, lettering and bronzing from rebuild. The tuning pins have nice sufficient torque from the new pinblock and it tunes up very nicely and stability is good. The new one piece keytops installed in 1998 are still in great condition.
The action was partially rebuilt. New hammers heads and knuckles were installed on original shanks and flanges. New hammer rest felts were installed on original whippens. The hammers currently have little to no wear on the felt. Unfortunately, some of the original parts have vertigris. See attached photo. Primarily on hammer flange pinning. Regular CLP lubrication has been controlling it between services. The piano has the original back action with fixed tab sostenuto underlevers and glued flanges. New damper felts have been installed.
The regulation is close to manufacturer specs given the age of the action parts. The action has a medium light touch. The tone is very warm but has sufficient power when needed. The bass is powerful and full. The melody octaves project clearly over the piano but not overally harsh when playing FF. The piano has good repetition once action centers are clp treated. It is very controllable on pp passages and has a broad dynamic range."
