William Knabe, born in Kreuzberg, Germany moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1833 after learning his
craft as a cabinet and piano maker. After working for another piano builder, he started his own business
in 1835 buying and selling, tuning and repairing used pianos. Knabe partnered with another piano
builder, William Henry Gaehle in 1837, forming Knabe & Gaehle. When Gaehle passed away in 1855,
Knabe gained control of the company, changing the name to William Knabe & Co. William died in 1864
and left the company to his two sons, Earnest and William Knabe Jr. Throughout the 1800s and early
1900s, Knabe became one of the most respected names in piano history, building high quality square
grand (until the late 1800s), upright and grand pianos. His numerous patents and innovations helped to
improve and to develop piano’s.
