Bösendorfer 290 Imperial Grand Piano

A magnificent instrument with a distinguished Viennese provenance.

This exceptional Bösendorfer 290 Imperial Grand Piano has had just one owner throughout its lifetime.

Its original owner was an accomplished musician whose professional ambitions led him to build one of Austria’s largest business enterprises. Although his dedication to business left limited time for music, his appreciation for exceptional craftsmanship and the finest musical instruments never diminished.

The piano occupied a beautiful private apartment in the heart of Vienna, where it was played only occasionally, primarily during distinguished private gatherings and representative functions.

Meticulously cared for and exceptionally lightly used, this magnificent Imperial Grand remains in pristine condition.

A rare opportunity to acquire one of the world's most celebrated concert grand pianos, distinguished not only by its extraordinary musical capabilities but also by its remarkable history, single ownership, and exceptional state of preservation.

At 9'7" in length, the Imperial is Bösendorfer’s legendary full-size concert grand. Its defining feature is an extended 97-key keyboard covering eight full octaves, giving the instrument nine additional bass notes beyond the conventional 88-key piano.

Those additional bass strings contribute far more than extra notes. They add resonance to the entire instrument, helping create the immense tonal foundation and orchestral character for which the Imperial has become famous.

Bösendorfer approaches piano construction differently from many traditional makers. Through its Resonance Case Principle, portions of the spruce body become an active part of the instrument’s sound production, allowing the piano to develop a rich spectrum of tonal color while responding to subtle changes in touch and dynamics.

The result is an instrument capable of tremendous power without sacrificing warmth, clarity, or delicacy.
