Last year Vienna was celebrating the 200th anniversary of Johann Strauss II (born October 25, 1825) with a massive, year-long festival. The "Straussing It Up" highlight included beaming the Blue Denube into space.
The Bösendorfer Model 200 “Strauss” edition takes the already warm, resonant character of the standard Model 200 and adds an artistic, Viennese identity inspired by Johann Strauss II, often featuring elegant cabinet detailing that reflects 19th-century Vienna’s musical culture; tonally, it retains the signature Bösendorfer qualities: dark, singing bass, richly colored midrange, and a clear but rounded treble — enhanced by the Resonance Case Principle, which gives the instrument an orchestral depth and bloom especially suited to lyrical, dance-like phrasing associated with Strauss’s music; the action remains highly responsive yet slightly cushioned, favoring expressive nuance over percussive brilliance, and overall the “Strauss” version is less about altering the core performance specs and more about pairing Bösendorfer’s refined, romantic sound with a visual and cultural homage to Vienna’s golden age of music.
This instrument was completely rebuilt in 2025 with new Abel hammers, new Bolduc pinblock, complete regulation of the mechanism and strings.
The Bösendorfer 200 feels luxurious and felty. At 200 cm long, 6’7″, it’s wonderfully a ‘big piano in a small body’. It feels very concert - like for being a 200 cm. The pianissimo is light and feathery. At louder dynamic ranges it feels more bold. The tone in bass and middle are warm and soft, contrasting to the fairly brilliant top end signature of Bösendorfer.
