This was my mother's beloved piano, one of the tallest vertical Steinways. Mom was a classically-trained pianist and chose this instrument for its rich sound. She purchased it in Columbus, OH in 1970 and moved it to its current location in Bethesda in 1973. Not long afterward she had it restrung with new pins, and a Dampp-Chaser dehumidifier installed. Its heyday with her was in the late 70s and 80s, playing classical music, Christmas carols, and some ragtime and folk tunes. And accompanying family and friends on violin. It has not been played much in recent years but Mom guarded it from abuse from visiting children. (While encouraging them to try it -- gently -- under her supervision.)

The attached letter from Steinway identifies this piano as a "Model X". Larry Fine's classic Steinway chart (see "Buying a Used Steinway" on pianobuyer.com) calls it a Model F. It measures 53.5" high, and has the beautiful and powerful classic Steinway sound.
