This is a Mason & Hamlin Model A in Satin Ebony. It is 5’8” and was Handmade in the US in 1991. It is in excellent overall condition.


Mason and Hamlin is distinct amongst its American contemporaries. More full than a Baldwin, more character than a Steinway. They have a cult like following. At only a few hundred made by hand each year, they’re tough to find!



Tone
The Bass register is full with surprisingly clarity. The tenor section is round, gentle and at the same time can bark when asked. The treble has beautiful, silvery qualities. The voicing has beautiful continuity without being dry like a Steinway. The sustain is also something to write home about!



Condition



Cabinet 8/10
The cabinet has a couple prior finish repairs (pictured below).



Action /keytops 10/10
The Renner action has been voiced/regulated by a Registered Piano Technician.  It is quick & honest; it does what you tell it to do! The hammers still look new!


Soundboard 10/10
Tapered Eastern white spruce like the finest pianos in the world! No cracks or ridges.



Pinblock 10/10
Quarter sawn hard rock maple pinblock. Tuning holds great!


Bridges 10/10
Solid Maple bridges. The world standard.


Strings 9/10
The strings could almost pass for new. Decades of life left in them still.


Tension Resonator 10/10
The spider brace is a hallmark feature. It’s like new.


Brass hardware 7/10
The brass is in good condition, not perfect. It is a 1991 after all.

Bench 6/10
Padding was added to the bench by the original owner to provide more comfort. It opens for sheet music storage
