A stunning piano that sounds and plays very well - especially if your taste runs to victorian. This rare and ornate model was the largest and most expensive upright piano in the Steinway product line at the time. The instrument is made of Brazilian Rosewood with extensively carved legs, moldings and trim and the tone quality will rival any quality upright piano built today.

As for the sound, at this size the instrument is more or less an upright grand and has a powerful bass register, plenty of brightness, a pleasant action, and that "Steinway sound". The piano has received regular maintenance for the last 10 years. Keytops have been replaced and there has been regular repair and tuning by an excellent piano technician. It is ready for a tuning now but there are no major issues anywhere in the piano that we are aware of. The action does make some clicking and clacking sounds, a technician has taken a look at the piano and said these are minor issues due perhaps to some keytops needing to be reglued or some new felt added.

There is plenty of incidental cosmetic damage from the last 145 years of its life: chips from the back from a move, damage to the leg and bench from a previous owners dog. The piano is rosewood that has been ebonized, and as you can see some of the black "ebony" finish is brittle and has deteriorated in some places, revealing gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood beneath. It could be refinished black or the black could be removed for a natural effect. None of the cosmetic issues detract from the pianos playability and thunderous sound - this piano loves Beethoven!

Listed at $1000 in the 1881 catalogue ($25,000 today) and purchased for $2,400 in 1979 ($8,500 today) by the previous owner. Selling for $1000 today in 2021 dollars and we will consider offers. A restored example of this model sold for over $30,000 at Antique Piano Shop.

If you are local to us we do know an excellent local piano mover who will move the piano skillfully and safely - expect to pay them $400-$500 for this service. DO NOT hire a regular moving company even if they say they can move a piano - we made this mistake and were lucky the piano and the movers survived. This is a massive piano.
