The Model A 6'1'' Steinway piano was produced from 1878 to 1897. This particular Steinway was built in 1892, fully restored and refinished in 1968. The piano has resided in the same house in Santa Fe, New Mexico for the past thirty years.

The piano is ebony satin finished, and the leg design is the rare and very ornate "fireplug" style. The hammers were filed and the action regulated in August 2003. Since it has been little played since that time no further filing is necessary. More recently, the hammers were voiced for a more mellow tone and longer sustain in July 2026.

Evaluations:
Andrew. P. Riordan of Washburn Piano Co. in Albuquerque 2003: “The Model A 6' 1'' Steinway piano was produced from 1878 to 1897 with what is now referred to as a ‘round tail’ design. This instrument has been completely refinished and restored to an excellent condition. The action of the piano has recently been reworked and is in remarkable condition for a piano of its age. The piano has a variation of the coveted empire style Steinway leg design. The piano has its original key tops. From the serial number on the piano, the date of manufacture was 1892 and was refinished and restored in 1968. It is very unusual to find a piano this old in this condition. The piano has a romantic tone with power that is unusual for a vintage Steinway. The action is very responsive as well."

An evaluation by piano technician Joan Wagoner was completed on August 6, 2015. A few highlights: "The soundboard has been repaired in the past with shims. Both bridges have a small amount of hairline cracks which do not pose a problem at this time. The action parts show wear. I don't see any cracks in the cast iron plate. The tuning pins, which I spot-checked are tight. The pitch is close to standard pitch. The key tops and sharps are in excellent condition."

Evaluation by piano technician Ron Newman in July 2026: “Light, responsive action, down weight 29 grams, up weight 15 grams at note C4. Sostenuto good. After touch .037, perfect. Let-off is reasonable. Knuckle wear reasonable. Spot check of repetition springs looked perfect. Blow distance is 46 to 49 mm.  Since the after-touch is perfect, maybe a long blow distance is what the action wants. The hammers look new, even though she says it was rebuilt in 1968.  It just needs voicing for sustain and 'mellowness'. [That voicing was done after this evaluation in July 2026] Key tops are original, unusual that they're still pristine. As others have said, a highly stylized case, with good 'curb appeal'."
