Steinway Model B Grand Piano (SN: 303616), built in 1940; selected to serve as a performance piano in Steinway's Concert & Artist Dept. until 1960, when Steinway "retired" it for refurbishment. Sold to CCNY in 1963 where it served as a performance piano in CCNY’s recital hall until 1993. Composer Yuichi Abe purchased the instrument 1993 and added new Steinway strings, a refinished ebony case, and new Renner action. I purchased the piano in 1998, and it continues to be remarkably stable, with original pin block and soundboard. Throughout its life it has delivered a fabulous sound, rich in depth and color through its range, as well as the power which all pianists associate with a ”B”.
