Steinway & Sons Model A-III 6’4-1/2” Grand
“Stretch" A, Built In New York City, 1917

Steinway A
The “stretch A” grands were only made from 1915 to 1940. These pianos are highly sought after. At just over 6’4”, the A-III has what many consider to be the finest scale design ever produced by Steinway & Sons. The Stretch A gives you a semi-concert grand level of power and dynamic range, akin to a Model B, but with a more balanced cello register, a thundering bass, and the classic, singing bell tones in the melodic section. These pianos were so well-designed by Steinway’s chief engineer, Henry Ziegler, they outsold the Model B in their day.
This particular piano was built at the height of the Golden Era, in 1917, at the New York factory. It still has its original old-growth Adirondack Spruce soundboard, with plenty of crown intact.
