This wonderful Steinway Model B is from a home.
This piano was hardly played. It is a Classic Steinway B tone.
During the 1990’s Steinway used spruce from New York State. The overall tone of this spruce compared to Sitka Spruce is different. When you play a Steinway from the 1990’s you walk away understanding that these pianos have more power than the 2000 to 2020 years. Power is that extra boost of tone when you play into the piano. My experience has been that Steinway pianos come out of the factory with 1 of three tones as the primary overall tone. About 15% of them are Dark Pianos, 70% are Classic sounding and 15% have above average power and brilliance. During the 1990’s and in fact during the 70’s my experience has been that those years produced more pianos with above average power. Maybe 40% of the total production that Steinway was making during that time. That is why you will hear people say that they have played a model L that had a lot of power and even the M and S during that decade had more power than some larger pianos from different years.
When you play this 1997 you hear it. It takes a hold of you. The attack is there as soon as you press the key. You are in full control of its power when you are used to an instant sound when you depress the key. This piano is not for the timid. But once you are used to the power and can control it, this will be an amazing instrument.
The amazing things about visiting the Dallas Steinway Selection Room is you can experience many different decades of instruments.
