Built in Germany in 1912 (Serial Number 102892)

This is a fabulous example of a pre-war (i.e. WW1) Bechstein. Unlike many used pianos from this era, this piano is in near original condition and sounds and plays like a dream. It was bought new from Harrod's in London in 1912 (the same year the Titanic sunk) and eventually made its way to the Los Angeles, where it was bought at an auction in Beverly Hills in 1969, where it has stayed in our family ever since. During this time, it has been tuned regularly and the action has been refurbished and regulated. It has a perfect set of ivory keys that show almost no traces of discoloration. The strings, hammers and pin block and soundboard are all original and the piano has good tuning stability. The soundboard has a couple thin cosmetic cracks that appear to have no acoustical significance. The rosewood case shows some signs of discoloration and checking in places, but it is structurally sound and quite presentable in appearance. A dealer would want to refinish it before resale. The piano has excellent consistent tone in all registers, with serious growling bass and wonderful sweet harmonics in the midrange and highs. The original Schwander tied action is even and responsive from top to bottom as well.

I wish I didn't need to see this piano, but I need to make room for a new concert grand. If you are a musician looking for a truly inspiring instrument, do yourself a favor and stop by and play this rare time traveler. Bechstein's were the most prized piano brand at the turn of the century and were the piano of choice for many famous composers like Liszt and Debussy. They are still considered by some to be among the best pianos ever made. I'm only selling it to make room for a new larger concert grand.
